わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道それに北半球の冷温帯に広く分布しています。懸垂性の樹状地衣類の一種で、亜高山帯の針葉樹などの樹皮や枝先に絡みつき、長く垂れ下がります。基本的な構造は円筒形で、よく分枝して長さは１メートル以上になることもあります。樹木などに寄生しているわけではなく、空気中の水分を直接吸収し、光合成を行っています。漢方では、乾燥したものを松羅（しょうら）と呼び、鎮咳・利尿剤などにするそうです。

サルオガセ科サルオガセ属の樹状地衣類で、学名は Usnea longissima。英名は Old man's beard。

The old man's beard (Usnea longissima) belongs to the Usneaceae family. It is a lichen that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido, and widely in the cool temperate area of Northern Hemispere. This lichen generally grows hanging from tree branches and barks, resembling gray or greenish hair. It is much branched and can reach up to 1 m long. It also uses photosynthesis to acquire its nutrient and directly absorbs moisture in the air. The dried plant is called "Shora", and used as a herbal medicine for antiussive or diuretic.
