The Common nipplewort (Lapsana communis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual or a perennial herb that is native to Europe and southwest Asia. It is now widely naturalized in North America, Australia, and Asia. In Japan, it was discovered in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1959. The stem is erect and grows to a height of 80 to 120 cm. The lower leaves on the stem are often pinnate compound, while the upper leaves are small, elliptic, and sessile. 1 cm in diameter, the flower head is composed only of yellow ray florets. The fruit is an achene surrounded by stiff involucral scales.
