南アフリカのナタール州に分布しています。単幹で基部から分枝し、高さは６メートルほどになります。葉は羽状複葉で、長さは３メートルにもなります。幅広い小葉は濃緑色で、鋸歯がなく縁には小さな棘があります。花序は円錐形で緑がかった黄色をしています。５センチほどある果実は朱色です。 |

The Natal cycad (Encephalartos natalensis) belongs to Cycadaceae (the Cycad family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed in Natal, South Africa. It is a single trunk, branched from the base, and is about 6 m high. The leaves are pinnate compound and can reach up to 3 m in length. The wide leaflets are dark green with no serrations and small spines on the edges. The inflorescences are conical and have a greenish-yellow color. The fruit, which is about 5 cm long, is vermilion. |
