ツバキ科ナツツバキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Stewartia pseudo-camellia。英名は Japanese stewartia。
The Japanese stewartia (Stewartia pseudo-camellia) belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to Japan, westward from Miyagi prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. The barks are reddish brown and smooth, furrowed into large scaly ridges when aging. The leaves are elliptic to oblong and alternate with fine toothed edges. They have white silky hairs on abaxial sides. The white 5-petaled flowers come in June and July. The outermost petals are tinged pale green. It is also known as "sharano-ki" in Japan.
