中国の北部から中部が原産です。わが国へは奈良時代に渡来したと言われています。高さは１０メートルほどになり、長い枝には托葉が変化した棘があります。葉は卵形から長卵形で長い葉柄があり、互生します。３脈が目立ちます。５月から７月ごろ、葉腋に淡い黄緑色の花を咲かせます。９月から１０月ごろ、長楕円形の果実が赤褐色または暗灰赤色に熟します。和名は、初夏に芽吹くことから。漢方では大棗（たいそう）と呼ばれ、強壮や炎症緩和、利尿などに利用されます。中国語では「棗（zao）」と呼ばれます。

クロウメモドキ科ナツメ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Zizyphus jujuba。英名は Jujube。

The Jujube (Zizyphus jujuba) belongs to Rhamnaceae (the Buckthorn family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to northern and central China. It was introduced into Japan in Nara Period (710-794). This tree can reach about 10 m in height and bears spines formed from stipulars on the long branches. The leaves are ovate to long-ovate and alternate with long petioles. They have prominent 3 veins. The pale yellowish-green flowers come on the axiles from May to July. The fruits are oblong and ripen in reddish-brown or dark reddish-gray in September to October. They are used for food or herbal medicine. In Chinese, it is called "棗" (zao).
