わが国の本州、山口県が原産です。江戸時代の中頃に、長門市仙崎大日比の海岸に漂着した果実の種子から育ったのが起源といわれています。いまもその原木が現存し、天然記念物となっています。高さは３〜６メートルくらいになり、楕円状披針形の葉には狭い翼があります。５月ごろ、枝先の葉腋に白色の花を咲かせます。果実は翌年の４月から６月に黄色く熟します。酸味が強く、マーマレードやジュースに加工されます。別名で「なつだいだい（夏橙）」とも呼ばれます。

ミカン科ミカン属の常緑小高木で、学名は Citrus natsudaidai。英名は Natsudaidai orange、Japanese summer orange。

The Natsudaidai orange (Citrus natsudaidai) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to Yamaguchi prefecture of Honshu in Japan. It is thought that the original seed drifted ashore at the Ouhibi Coast in the miidle of Edo Era (about 250 years ago). The tree from the original seed is existing now, and are designated as one of Japan's protected species. This tree can reach 3-6 m in height. Leaves are elliptic-lanceolate with narrow winged petioles. White flowers come on the terminal axiles in May. Fruits are ripen yellow in the next year's April to June. Because of the fruits have a strong acid taste, they are processed to marmalades or juices.
