The Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to western China. This herb was started to cultivate in 2000 years ago, and introduced into Japan in ancient days. Its name appeares as "Ki" in the Chronicles of Japan. Welsh onion has many species and different spiecies is cultivated regionally. In the Kanto and Tohoku regions, the "Nebuka-negi" (welsh onion) is grown, where the white part of the leaf sheath is mainly edible, while the "Ha-negi" (welsh onion) is grown west of the Kansai region, where the green part is edible. In the Chubu region, there is "Koshitsu-negi", which has intermediate characteristics. The "Banno-negi" (green onion) is the "Kujo-negi" from Fukuoka Prefecture. April to May, spherical inflorescences with numerous small whitish flowers are seen on the terminal stems.
