中央アメリカから南アメリカが原産です。熱帯乾燥林に生え、蔓性で木質化した茎は高さ３０メートルにも達します。葉は濃緑色の３出複葉で、２個の小葉は楕円形、頂小葉は３個の爪状の巻きひげと化し、これによって他の植物などに絡みついて、縦にも横にも急速に広がります。晩春から初夏にかけて、葉腋に黄色でラッパ状の花を咲かせます。果実は扁平な莢果で、長さ２５〜９５センチにもなります。属名は、スコットランドの植物学者ジェームズ・マクファディン（1798-1850）に因みます。

ノウゼンカズラ科マクファディエナ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Macfadyena unguis-cati (syn. Dolichandra unguis-cati)。英名は Cat's claw creeper、Funnel creeper。

The Cat's claw creeper (Macfadyena unguis-cati) belongs to Bignoniaceae (the Trumpet creeper family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to Central and South America. It grows in tropical dry forests. The vine's woody stems can reach a height of 30 m. The leaves are dark green and trifoliate, with two leaflets that are elliptic, and the apical leaflet that is transformed into three claw-like tendrils that rapidly spread vertically and horizontally, entangling other plants and other vegetation. Yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers bloom in the leaf axils from late spring to early summer. The fruit is a flattened pod, 25 to 95 cm long. The genus is named for Scottish botanist James Macfadyen (1798-1850).
