アルゼンチンが原産です。日当たりのよいところを好み、基部で多く分枝して、こんもりした草姿になります。高さは１５〜４０センチくらい。葉は羽状複葉で、小葉は線状です。６月から１０月ごろにかけて、２センチくらいのカップ形の花を咲かせます。花色は、もともとは青色や紫色ですが、品種改良が進んでいて、「モンブラン（cv. Mont Blanc）」のような白色系もあります。サントリーから出ている「フェアリーベル」は、この改良品種です。

ナス科アマモドキ属の多年草で、学名は Nierembergia caerulea。英名は Cup flower。

The cup flower (Nierembergia caerulea) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Argentine. This herb grows in sunny fields, branched at the bases and spreading mounds. It can reach 15-40 cm in height. The leaves are pinnate compound with linear leaflets. The cup-shaped 2 cm across flowers come in June through October. The flower color is commonly blue or purple, and the some cultivars are white, such as 'Mont Blanc'.
