わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島に分布しています。山地のやや湿ったところに生え、高さは３０〜７０センチになります。茎は太く４稜があり、卵形の葉は対生します。７月から９月ごろ、茎の先端や葉腋から穂状花序をだし淡いピンク色の唇形花を咲かせます。和名に反して、茎や葉に苦みはないそうです。

シソ科ニガクサ属の多年草で、学名は Teucrium japonicum。英名はありません。

"Niga-kusa" (Teucrium japonicum) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to various parts of Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in slightly damp areas of the mountains and can reach 30-70 cm in height. The stem is thick and has four ridges, and the ovate leaves are opposite. The spikes are borne on the tips of stems and axils and bloom pale pink lip-shaped flowers from July to September. Contrary to the Japanese name "Niga-kusa", it seems that there is no bitterness on the stems and leaves.
