アメリカの北東部からカナダの南東部が原産です。湿地や高原の石灰岩地に生え、高さは１２〜２１メートルになります。樹冠は狭い円錐形で、短い枝が広がり、芳香があります。葉は鱗片状で、４列に対生します。果実は長さ１センチほどの球果で、淡褐色に熟します。「においひば」は、ヨーロッパに最初に導入された北アメリカ産の樹木です。

ヒノキ科ネズコ属の常緑高木で、学名は Thuja occidentalis。英名は Northern white-cedar。

The Northern white-cedar belongs to Cupressaceae (the Cypress family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the northeast United States and southeast Canada. This tree grows in swamps and limestone uplands, and can reach 12-21 m in height. It is a aromatic tree with a narrow conical crown of short spreading branches. Leaves are scalelike, opposite in 4 rows. Cones are elliptical about 1 cm long and ripen light brown. Nortern white-cedar is probably the first North American tree introduced into Europe.
