The Sweet coltsfoot (Petasites pyrenaicus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the central Mediterranean region, from Greece to Italy, and also in Algeria and Tunisia. It grows along forest edges, moist grasslands, riverbanks, and roadsides, reaching a height of 10-30 cm. It has naturalized in central and western Europe and was introduced to Japan in the early Showa period (1926-1989). The leaves are round to kidney-shaped with serrated edges.It is dioecious. From January to June, it extends its scapes and produces racemes with pinkish-purple flower heads. The flowers have a vanilla-like fragrance. It is also known as "Nioi-kanto". "Kanto" is another name for "fuki" (Japanese butterbur).
