The fragrant water lily (Nymphaea odorata) belongs to Nymphaeaceae (the Water lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the eastern North America. This herb is aquatic and grows in lakes, ponds and quiet water of ditches. The leaves are 10-30 cm wide, shiny green above, purplish red beneath and float on the water. The fragrant flowers are 7.5-12.5 cm in diameter, and appear from June to September. They usually open from early morning until noon. The photos are a cultivar 'Caroliniana'.
