インドネシアのモルッカ諸島が原産だと考えられています。また古代から栽培されていました。湿潤な熱帯バイオームに生え、高さは１〜５メートルになります。幹は直立していて、枝分かれがほとんどなく、幹からは太い気根が生えます。葉は線形で、葉縁は滑らか、先端が尖ります。葉の断面はＷ字を上下逆にしたような形をしています。ごく希に雄花序をだしますが、雌花序が存在しないため、果実を実らせることは観察されていません。葉には芳香があり、東南アジアにおいて、料理の香り付けに広く用いられています。

The Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius) belongs to Pandanaceae (the Screwpine family). It is a small evergreen tree that is thought to be native to the Moluccas in Indonesia. It has also been cultivated since ancient times. It grows in humid tropical biomes and can reach heights of between 1 and 5 m. The trunk is upright and rarely branches, and thick aerial roots grow from the trunk. The leaves are linear, with smooth edges and pointed tips. The cross-section of the leaf is shaped like an upside-down W. It rarely produces male inflorescences, but as there are no female inflorescences, it has not been observed to produce fruit. The leaves have a pleasant aroma and are widely used in Southeast Asia to flavor food.
