ニュージーランドが原産です。成長が早く「やし」に似た樹形で、高さは６〜９メートルほどになります。成長するとよく分枝して、光沢のある５０〜１００センチの葉を束生します。初夏に円錐花序を伸ばし、芳香のある白い花を咲かせます。果実は、翌年の秋に青白色に熟します。

リュウゼツラン科センネンボク属の常緑小高木で、学名は Cordyline australis。英名は Cabbage tree、Cabbage palm。

The cabbage tree (Cordyline australis) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to New Zealand. This tree grows quickly, forms palm-like crown and can reach 6-9 m in height. The stem is much-branched when mature and fascicled glossy long leaves. The panicles are borne and bloom scented white flowers in early summer. The fruits ripen in blue-white in the next year's fall.
