アメリカの南西部、ネバダ州南東部からニューメキシコ州、テキサス州西部に分布しています。渓谷や湿り気のある斜面に生え、高さは７〜８メートルになります。樹皮は淡灰色で厚く、鱗片状に割れ目が入ります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、楕円形の小葉が１３〜２１個つきます。晩春から初夏にかけて、芳香のある淡紅紫色の蝶形花を咲かせます。

マメ科ハリエンジュ属の落葉低木で、学名は Robinia neomexicana。英名は New Mexico locust、Southwestern locust。

The New Mexico locust (Robinia neomexicana) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is found in the southwestern United States, from southeastern Nevada to New Mexico and western Texas. It grows in canyons and on moist slopes and grows 7 to 8 m tall. The bark is light gray and thick, with scaly creases. It has odd pinnate compound leaves with 13 to 21 elliptic leaflets. The fragrant, pale reddish-purple papillionaceous flowers bloom from late spring to early summer.
