わが国の各地をはじめ、アジアの温帯から亜熱帯、ヨーロッパに分布しています。道端や荒れ地、草原などに生え、高さは５〜２５センチになります。根もとからよく分枝して、全体に短い毛があります。葉は、広卵形から狭卵形で対生します。３月から６月、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。花弁は５個、花柱は３個あります。和名は、小さな葉を「のみ（蚤）」の短衣に喩えたもと。

ナデシコ科ノミノツヅリ属の越年草で、学名は Arenaria serpyllifolia。英名は Thyme leaf sandwort。

The thyme leaf sandwort (Arenaria serpyllifolia) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a biennial herb that is distributed in Japan, as well as the temperate and the sub-tropical areas of Asia and Europe. This herb grwos in roadsides, wasteland or grasslands and can reach 5-25 cm in height. The leaves are broad-ovate to narrow-ovate and opposite. The small white flowers appear from March to June. The flowers have five petals and three styles.
