The "Nomura-kaede" (Acer amoenum cv. Sanguineum) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is a cultivar of the "Oo-momiji" that is distributed in various parts of Japan and has been known since the Edo period. The leaves are large, palm-shaped with 7-8 lobes and serrated. They are dark purple at the time of young, tinged with green in summer, and becomes purple-red in fall. It is planted as a garden tree, but it seems to be suitable for cold regions.
