The Wild carrot (Daucus carota ssp. carota) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe and western Asia. It has become naturalized in temperate regions of the world and was discovered in Japan in the early Showa Period (1926-1989). It grows in grasslands and along roadsides and is 15 to 120 cm tall. The roots are straight and thin, branched and woody. The leaves are 2-3 times pinnate compound with linear to lanceolate lobes. From July to September, it produces large umbels with numerous small white flowers. The fruit is a long, spherical, cremocarp with long spines along the ribs.
