The Pacific beauty palm (Clinostigma savoryanum) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is an endemic species of the Ogasawara Islands of Japan. It grows in mountain forests and valleys, and can reach a height of 5 to 10 m. When young, the trunk is light green and bulges near the base, and as it grows it takes on a grayish hue. The leaves are pinnate compound leaves, and are arranged in whorls at the top of the trunk, reaching a length of 1 to 2 m. The leaflets are linear, coriaceous, and dull-glossy, and there are about 100 pairs of them. From July to September, it produces a panicle wrapped in a boat-shaped bract, and it blooms with light yellow flowers. It is monoecious. The fruit ripens red in May or June of the following year. The seeds are a favorite food of mice.
