ヨーロッパから北アフリカ、南西アジアに分布しています。現在では北アメリカの東部にも帰化しています。沼沢や湿地などに生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は卵形で対生し、縁には粗い鋸歯があります。７月から１０月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から花序をだし、薄紫色の花を咲かせます。全体に強いペパーミントの香りがあり、サラダや香辛料などに利用されます。別名で「ウォーターミント」とも呼ばれます。

The Water mint (Mentha aquatica) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to North Africa and Southwest Asia. It is now naturalized in eastern North America. It grows in swamps and marshes and is 60 to 90 cm tall. The leaves are ovate and opposite, with coarsely serrated edges. From July to October, it produces inflorescences from the stem tops and leaf axils and produces light purple flowers. The whole plant has a strong peppermint aroma and is used in salads and as a spice.
