ぬますぎ (沼杉)

北アメリカの東部からメキシコ湾岸、それにミシシッピー川流域に分布しています。流れのある湿地帯や川岸の湿ったところに生え、高さは２０メートルほどになります。地中または水中から呼吸根を出します。雌雄異株です。「メタセコイア」に似ていますが、線形の葉が側枝に対生する「メタセコイア」と異なり、こちらは互生します。４月ごろ、枝先に長さ１０〜２０センチの雄花序と、数個の雌花をつけます。別名で「らくうしょう（落羽松）」とも呼ばれ、側枝が鳥の羽根に似ていて、黄葉が終わると落葉してしまうことから。 |

The Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) belongs to Cupressaceae (the Bald cypress family). It is a tall deciduos tree that is native to eastern North America, along the Gulf Coast and the reach of Mississippi. This tree grows in flowing swamps and wet stream banks, and can reach about 20 m in height. Bald cypress growing in swamps have espiratory roots called cypress knees. These are woody projections sent above the ground or water. It is dioecious. The leaves are linear and alternate arranged on the branchlets. The 10-20 cm male flowering clusters and several male flowers are borne on the terminal blanches in April. It is also known as "Rakuu-sho" (fallen-feather pine) in Japan, because its side branches resemble bird feathers and its leaves fall off when the yellow leaves are finished. |
