アフリカの北部が原産です。葉は直径４０センチほどで鋸歯があり、水面に浮葉します。花は直径１５〜２５センチほどの白色で、夜に咲き、朝には凋みます。古代エジプトのラメセス二世（紀元前１３０４〜１２３７）の墳墓に描かれた「すいれん」は本種です。

スイレン科スイレン属の多年草で、学名は Nymphaea lotus。英名は Egyptian white water-lily。

The Egyptian white water-lily (Nymphaea lotus) belongs to Nymphaeaceae (the Waterlily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to northern Africa. The leaves are about 40 cm in diameter with toothed edges and float on the water. The flowers are white 15-25 cm in height and bloom at night and close in the morning. This species are found in the burial tomb of Ramesses II (1304-1237BC) in ancient Egypt.
