アメリカの南部からメキシコの北東部・中部に分布しています。湖沼や湿地などに生え、根茎から長い茎を伸ばします。葉は円形から卵形、楕円形で、しばしば褐色の斑紋があります。春から秋にかけて、直径６〜１１センチの鮮黄色の花を咲かせます。和名では「メキシコすいれん（メキシコ睡蓮）」と呼ばれます。

The Yellow water lily (Nymphaea mexicana) belongs to Nymphaeaceae (the Waterlily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the southern United States to northeastern and central Mexico. It grows in lakes and marshes, with long stems growing from rhizomes. The leaves are round to ovate or elliptic, often mottled with brown. It produces bright yellow flowers 6 to 11 cm in diameter from spring to fall. It is called "Mexico-suiren" (Mexican water lily) in Japanese.
