熱帯アジアからインドが原産です。沼沢などに生え、長い葉柄の先に楕円形から円形の浮葉をつけます。革質で縁には鋸歯があります。長い花梗をのばし、夕方から翌日の午前中まで紅色の花を咲かせます。花披片は２０〜４０個あり、雄しべも赤色です。台湾にも帰化していて、台湾華語では「紅花睡蓮」と呼ばれます。

The India red water lily (Nymphaea rubra) belongs to Nymphaeaceae (the Waterlily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to tropical Asia and India. It grows in swamps and streams and has elliptic to circular floating leaves at the end of its long petiole. They are leathery with serrated edges. It has long peduncles and produces red flowers from the evening until the next morning. There are 20 to 40 tepals and the stamens are red. It is also naturalized in Taiwan and is called "紅花睡蓮" in Taiwanese Chinese.
