マダガスカル島が原産です。わが国へは大正時代に渡来しました。湿地や浅瀬に生え、長さは７５センチほどになります。葉は葉脈が格子状になり、レースのカーテンのようです。これは流れの抵抗を減らすためと考えられています。水面に花茎を伸ばして、穂状花序にピンク色の花を咲かせます。

レースソウ科レースソウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Aponogeton fenestralis。英名は Lace plant、Madagascar lace-leaf。

The lace plant (Aponogeton fenestralis) belongs to Aponogetonaceae (the Cape-pondweed family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to Madagascar. It came to Japan in the Taisho era (about 100 years ago). This herb grows in swamps and shallow waters and is about 75 cm long. The leaves have a grid of veins, like a lace curtain. This is believed to reduce flow resistance. The flower stalks are extended to the surface of the water, and pink flowers bloom on the spikes.
