マダガスカル島が原産です。わが国へは大正時代に渡来しました。湿地や浅瀬に生え、長さは７５センチほどになります。葉は葉脈が格子状になり、レースのカーテンのようです。これは流れの抵抗を減らすためと考えられています。水面に花茎を伸ばして、穂状花序にピンク色の花を咲かせます。

レースソウ科レースソウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Aponogeton fenestralis。英名は Lace plant、Madagascar lace-leaf。

The Lace plant (Aponogeton fenestralis) belongs to Aponogetonaceae (the Cape-pondweed family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to Madagascar. It came to Japan in the Taisho era (1912-1926). This herb grows in swamps and shallow waters and is about 75 cm long. The leaves have a grid of veins, like a lace curtain. This is believed to reduce flow resistance. The flower stalks are extended to the surface of the water, and pink flowers bloom on the spikes.
