南アフリカのケープ地方が原産です。アロイデス種の変種で平地に生え、高さは１５センチほどになります。鱗茎があり、広線形の２〜３個の根生葉を伸ばします。３月から５月ごろ、花茎を出して総状花序をつけ、赤色から黄色、緑色それに赤紫色と変化する筒状花を咲かせます。

ユリ科ラケナリア属の多年草で、学名は Lachenalia aloides var. quadricolor。英名は Cape cowslip。

The Cape cowslip (Lachenalia aloides var. quadricolor) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Cape Province of South Africa. It is a variety of Lachenalia aloides, grows in flatlands and can reach about 15 cm in height. This herb has a balb and bears 2-3 broad-linear basal leaves. The raceme is borne atop of flowering stalk from March to May. The corolla is tubular, red at first and turns yellow, green and magenta.
