The Laelia undulata belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Costa Rica in Central America to northern South America. It grows in dry temperate forests at an altitude of 600 to 1200 m, epiphytic on trees and rocks. The stem is spindle-shaped and tapers at the base. The leaves are elliptic to oblong, leathery, and 2 to 3 in number. From autumn to spring, it produces a large raceme with thin scapes 60 to 180 cm long at the top of the stem, blooming about 20 dark reddish-purple flowers with long lateral petals. The specific epithet refers to the twisted lateral petals.
