ヨーロッパからアジアに分布しています。林内の半日陰に生え、高さは１０〜２０センチになります。わが国に自生する「ほとけのざ（仏の座）」の仲間ですが、匍匐性がありグランドカバーに利用されます。４月から６月ごろ、花茎を立ち上げて、ピンク色や黄色、白色などの花を咲かせます。銀白色やクリーム色の斑入り品種がたくさんあります。別名で「デッドネットル」とも呼ばれ、野菜やハーブティーなどに利用されます。

シソ科オドリコソウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Lamium maculatum。英名は Dead nettle、Lamium。

The Dead nettle (Lamium maculatum) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Europe and Asia. This herb grows in semi-shade places of woodlands and can reach 10-20 cm in height. It is creeping on the ground. The flowering stalks grows upward and bloom pink, yellow or white flowers from April to June. There are many variegated-leaf cultivars such as silvery white or cream. Dead nettle is used for a vegetable and a herbal tea.
