北アメリカ東部原産の「けづめさんざし（Crataegus crus-galli）」とメキシカーナ種（Crataegus mexicana）との種間交雑による園芸品種です。高さは１０メートルほどになり、枝は横に広がります。葉は倒卵形から楕円形で、縁には細かい鋸歯があり、光沢のある濃緑色です。初夏から夏にかけて、枝先に集散花序だし、白色の花を咲かせます。葯は淡紅色をしています。果実はなし状果で晩秋に赤く熟します。

バラ科サンザシ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Crataegus x lavallei。英名は Lavalle hawthorn。

The Lavalle hawthorn (Crataegus x lavallei) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is a cultivar produced by interspecific crossing between "cockspur hawthorn" (Crataegus crus-galli) and Mexican hawthorn (Crataegus mexicana) native to eastern North America. The height is about 10 meters, and the branches spread horizontally. The leaves are obovate to ovate, with fine serrations on the edges and a shiny dark green color. From early summer to summer, the inflorescences are borne on the tips of the branches and bloom white flowers. The anthers are pink. The fruits are pomes and ripen red in late fall.
