アメリカの中南部、テキサス州からニューメキシコ州それにメキシコ北部のチワワ州に分布しています。チワワ砂漠（Chihuahuan Desert）の指標植物とされます。葉は多肉質で叢生し、高さは４５センチほどになります。晩春から初夏にかけて、長さ４メートルほどの花序をだし、赤みを帯びた黄色い花を咲かせます。名前は、スペイン語で「小さなレタス（Little lettuce）」の意味だそうです。

リュウゼツラン科リュウゼツラン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Agave lechuguilla。英名は Lechuguilla。

The Lechuguilla (Agave lechuguilla) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to the central-southern United States; from Texas to New Mexico and northern Mexico; Chihuahuan. It is a indicator plant of Chihuahuan Desert. The leaves are carnose and clumping, and about 45 cm in height. The long flowering cluster, about 4 m long is borne, and the reddish tinged yellow flowers bloom from late spring to early summer. The Lechuguilla means "little lettuce" in Spanish.
