ヨーロッパの中・南部から西アジア、北アフリカが原産です。湿り気のある場所や放棄地などに生え、高さは４０〜７０センチになります。葉には爽やかなレモンの芳香があります。６月から７月ごろ、葉腋に淡いピンク色の唇形花を咲かせます。和名では「せいようやまはっか（西洋山薄荷）」と呼ばれます。またミツバチがよく飛来するので「ビーバーム（Bee balm）」の別名があります。

The lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to central-southern Europe, West Asia and North Africa. This herb grows in waste places and derelict lands and can reach 40-70 cm in height. The leaves have lemon-like brisk aroma. The pale pink labiate flowers come in the axiles from June to July. This herb is also called "Bee balm" caused by bee attracting.
