パラグアイとブラジル南部が原産です。ごく小さい着生植物です。中海抜の亜熱帯雨林や海岸山地に生え、高さは１０センチほどです。偽鱗茎はやや先細りの円筒形です。花は芳香があり、ほとんど白色で唇弁に目立つ紫色の斑紋、冬の終わりから夏に咲きます。花や果実は、ミルクやアイスクリームに入れるバニラの代用品として利用されています。

ラン科レプトテス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Leptotes bicolor。英名はありません。

The Leptotes bicolor belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to Paraguay and southern Brazil. It is a miniature sized epiphyte. This herb grows in mid-elevation subtropical rainforests and coastal mountains and grows to 10 cm in height. The pseudo-bulbs are terete. The flowers are fragrant, mostly white with a prominent purple patch on the labellum and bloom from late winter to summer. Its flowers and fruits are used as a substitute for vanilla in milk and ice cream.
