カナダのブリティッシュコロンビア州南部からカリフォルニア州の北西部、それに東にアイダホ州やモンタナ州に分布しています。開けた森や岩場の多い丘陵の斜面などに生え、高さは１．５～３メートルになります。葉は卵形で明るい緑色、全縁または鋸歯があり、対生します。５月から７月ごろ、白色の４弁花を、長い茎の先端に咲かせます。果実は長さ１センチほどの小さな蒴果です。アイダホ州の州花です。

アジサイ科バイカウツギ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Philadelphus lewisii。英名は Lewis's mock orange。

The Lewis's mock orange (Philadelphus lewisii) belongs to Hydrangeaceae (the Hydrangea family). It is a deciduous shrub that is native to from southern British Columbia north to northwestern California, and east to Idaho and Montana. This shrub grows in open woods and rocky hillsides, and it can reach 1.5-3 m in height. The leaves are ovate, light green, entire or toothed, and arranged in opposite. The white four-petaled flowers bloom at the ends of long stems from May to July. The fruit is a small capsule about 1 cm. Lewis's mock orange is the state flower of Idaho.
