The Basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a pernnial herb that is distributed in western North America. It grows in forests, shrublands, prairies, and riverbanks, and is 60 to 240 cm tall. In clusters, it can be over 1 m in diameter. The leaves are flat and linear, 30-90 cm long. The flowers bloom inconspicuously in cylindrical spikes at the top of the stem from June to August. The fruit is a caryopsis. The specific epithet is derived from the Latin for "cinereum" (like ashes).
