北アメリカの東部が原産です。わが国へは、昭和時代の初めに渡来しました。茎は直立し、高さは５０〜１００センチくらいになります。別名がいろいろあり、「きりんぎく（麒麟菊）」とか「ゆきあざみ（百合薊）」、「やりのほ（槍の穂）」などと呼ばれます。７月から９月ごろ、茎の先に穂状花序をだし、紫紅色や白色の小さな花を咲かせます。

キク科リアトリス属の多年草で、学名は Liatris spicata。英名は Gayfeather。

The Gayfeather (Liatris spicata) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb tha is native to eastern North America. This herb was introduced into Japan in the early days of Showa Era (1926-1989). The stem is erect and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The spikes are borne on the stem apices and bloom magenta to white, small flowers from July to September.
