北アメリカの東部が原産です。わが国へは、昭和時代の初めに渡来しました。茎は直立し、高さは５０〜１００センチくらいになります。別名がいろいろあり、「きりんぎく（麒麟菊）」とか「ゆきあざみ（百合薊）」、「やりのほ（槍の穂）」などと呼ばれます。７月から９月ごろ、茎の先に穂状花序をだし、紫紅色や白色の小さな花を咲かせます。

キク科リアトリス属の多年草で、学名は Liatris spicata。英名は Gayfeather。

The gayfeather (Liatris spicata) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb tha is native to eastern North America. This herb was introduced into Japan in the early days of Showa Era (about 80 years ago). The stem is erect and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The spikes are borne on the stem apices and bloom magenta to white, small flowers from July to September.
