インドや古代ペルシャが原産だと言われています。高さは６０センチほどになります。この葉には、「リコリス（スペイン甘草）」と「アニス（西洋茴香）」に似た強い風味、質、香りがあります。葉は鮮やかな緑色で、紫色のアクセントがあり、穂状花序に特徴的な紫色の花を咲かせます。葉も花も食用になるハーブです。別名で「アニスバジル」とか「ペルシャバジル」とも呼ばれます。

The Licorice basil (Ocimum basilicum cv. Licorice) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an annual herb that is said to originate from India and ancient Persia. It grows to a height of about 60 cm. The leaves have a strong flavor, quality, and fragrance similar to that of "licorice" (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and "anise" (Pimpinella anisum). The leaves are bright green with purple accents, and the distinctive purple flowers are produced in spikes. Both the leaves and flowers are edible herbs. It is also known as "anise basil" or "Persian basil".
