東南アジアが原産です。灌木状で棘が多く、高さは５メートルほどになります。葉は卵形で葉柄には小さな翼があります。一年を通じて黄白色でわずかに淡紫色を帯びた花を咲かせます。果実は球形で、直径２．５〜５センチ、黄色く熟します。果実は酸味が強くて独特の芳香があり、料理の付け合わせや飲み物の香り付けに使われます。別名で「キーライム（Key lime）」とか「メキシカンライム（Mexican lime）」とも呼ばれます。

ミカン科ミカン属の常緑低木で、学名は Citrus aurantifolia。英名は Lime、Key lime、Mexican lime。

The lime (Citrus aurantifolia) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Southeast Asia. This tree is shrubby with many thorns and can reach about 5 m ih height. The leaves are ovate with small wings. The flowers are yellowish white with a light purple tinge on the margins and appear throughout the year. The fruits are globose 2.5-5 cm across and ripen in yellow. They has a high acidity, a strong aroma and used for a garnish of dishes or a flavouring in beverages.
