「ライム」と「きんかん類」との属間交配種です。１９０９年にウォルター・テニソン・スウィングルによって交配されました。果物は小さく楕円形、緑がかった黄色で、小さな種子が含まれています。それは甘い果皮と「ライム」に似た味がする苦みのある甘い果肉を持っています。果物を丸ごと食べたり、ジュースや果皮を使って飲み物や料理に利用することができます。「ライムコット」は「ライム」よりも耐寒性がありますが、「きんかん」よりは耐寒性がありません。

ミカン科キトロフォルツネラ属の常緑低木で、学名は X Citrofortunella sp.。英名は Limequat。

The limequat (X Citrofortunella sp.) belongs to Ructaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small evergreen tree that is an intergeneric hybrid between the Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) and the kumquat (Fortunella sp.). It was hybridized by Walter Tennyson Swingle in 1909. The fruit is small, oval, greenish yellow and contains pips. It has a sweet tasting skin and a bitter sweet pulp that tastes similar to limes. The fruit can be eaten whole or the juice and rind can be used to flavor drinks and dishes. Limequats are more cold hardy than limes but less cold-hardy than kumquats.
