The little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native to North America. This herb grows in prairies, and can reach about 1 m in height. It is a bunchgrass and is prominent in tallgrass prairie, along with big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). The leaves are bluish-green or grayish-green, linear, and turn coppery or mostly orange color with tints of red or purple in fall.
