リカステ属はメキシコからボリビアまでの高地に２５種ほどが分布しています。地生または着生し、球茎は扁平な楕円形です。葉は楕円形で大きくひだが入り、茎頂に２〜４個がつきます。春から夏にかけて、茎の基部から花茎を伸ばし、さまざまな色の花を咲かせます。交雑種も数多く作出されています。
写真上・中１は「エリザベスパウエル（cv. Elizabeth Powell）」。交雑の定式は、（（L. lasioglossa x L. skinneri）x L. skinneri）x L. skinneri です。

ラン科リカステ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Lycaste sp.（属の総称）。英名は lycaste。

The Lycaste genus, consisting about 25 species belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). They are evergreen herbs that are native from Mexico to Bolivia. This herb grows in highlands and terrestrial or epiphytic. The bulbs are flat elliptic and bear 2-4 elliptic leaves at the top of stems. The leaves are pleated. The flowering stalks are borne at the base of stems and the various colored flowers bloom from spring to summer. The many cultivars have been raised.
