マレーシアからボルネオ島が原産です。高さは１０〜１５メートルほどになります。雌雄異株で、円錐花序に花弁のない小さな花を咲かせます。果実には赤色や黄色の軟らかい毛状突起があります。果肉は白い半透明で、「れいし（茘枝）」に似た味がします。現在では、世界の熱帯地方で広く栽培されています。

ムクロジ科ランブータン属の常緑高木で、学名は Nephelium mutabile。英名は Rambutan。

The Rambutan (Nephelium mutabile) belongs to Sapindaceae (the Soapberry family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to Malaysia and Borneo Island. This tree can reach 10-15 m in height. It is dioecious. The small non-petaled flowers bloom in the panicles. The fruits have red to yellow, soft trichomes. The fleshes are white, translucent and have a taste similar to Lychee. Nowadays, it is cultivated widely in the tropical areas.
