The Taiwan fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata var. konishii) belongs to Taxodiaceae (the Bald cypress family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed in Taiwan, Fujian Province in China, and northern Indochina. It grows in mixed broadleaf forests in mountainous regions, reaching heights of about 50 m. The crown is conical to pyramidal. The bark is dark brown to reddish-brown and fissured vertically. The leaves are linear-lanceolate with stomatal bands on both surfaces. It flowers from January to May, and the fruit is a conical cone measuring 2-3 cm in length. This species was discovered in 1907 by Mr. Nariaki Konishi on Mount Landaishan in Nantou County, Taiwan. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "巒大杉", and "台湾杉木" (tai wan shan mu) in Chinese.
