ヨーロッパの北極海沿岸から北部の山地および中央部の高山に分布しています。雪田などの湿った砂礫地に生え、高さは１０〜１５センチになります。葉は厚くて３裂し、短い葉柄があります。茎の上部の葉は線形です。６月から８月ごろ、真っ白な５弁花を咲かせます。開花後、時間が経つと花弁が赤色に変わります。南アルプスの北岳に生える「きただけそう（Callianthemum hondoense）」に似ています。

キンポウゲ科キンポウゲ属の多年草で、学名は Ranunculus glacialis。英名は Glacier buttercup。

The Glacier buttercup (Ranunculus glacialis) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the European arctic to the northern mountains and the central Alps. This herb grows in snow patches or wet secrees, and can reach 10-15 cm in height. The leaves are thick, tri-lobate with short petioles. The cauline leaves upper part of stems are linear. The pure white, five-petaled flowers bloom from June to August. The petals turn in red when aging. It is similar to the "Kitadake-so" (Callianthemum hondoense) that grows on Mt. Kitadake in the Southern Alps in Japan.
