中国の南東部に分布しています。丘陵から山地、それに河岸などに生え、高さは１〜１．５メートルほどになります。樹形は四方に広がるかマウンド状です。葉は濃緑色の卵形で、縁にははっきりとした鋸歯があります。５月から６月ごろ、枝先の散形花序に白色から濃いピンク色、深紅色などの花を咲かせます。果実は球形の液果で、秋に黒紫色に熟します。写真上は園芸品種の「スノーホワイト（cv. Snow white）」、中１〜２・下は「ピンキー（cv. Pinkie）」。

バラ科シャリンバイ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Raphiolepis indica。英名は Indian hawthorn。

The Indian hawthorn (Raphiolepis indica) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed in southeast China. This shrub grows in hillsides, mountains and streambanks and can reach 1-1.5 m in height. Crown is spreading or mound. Leaves are dark green, ovate with distinct sarrated edges. From May to June, the umbels with white to dark pink to crimson flowers are seen on the terminal branchlets. Fruits are globose and ripen blackish-purple in the fall.
