ヨーロッパの南部が原産です。高さは３．６メートルほどになります。線形の葉は長さ１．５メートルほどで叢生し、秋から冬にかけて茶褐色に変わります。夏の終わりごろ、茎の先に羽毛のような円柱状の花序をだします。庭園のバックグラウンドとして植栽されたり、乾燥させた花序がフラワーアレンジメントに使われたりします。

イネ科ワセオバナ属の多年草で、学名は Saccharum ravennae（syn. Erianthus ravennae）。英名は Ravenna grass、Hardy pampas grass。

The Ravenna grass (Saccharum ravennae) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the southern part of Europe. The height will be about 3.6 . The linear leaves are crowded about 1.5 m in length and turn brown from fall to winter. Around the end of summer, feather-like columnar inflorescences appear at the tips of the stems. It is planted as a garden background, or dried inflorescences are used in flower arrangements.
