The "Rebun-atsumori-so" (Cypripedium macranthum var. flavum) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species of Rebun Island in Hokkaido, Japan. It grows in coastal areas in bright grasslands that are slightly moist to slightly dry. It reaches a height of 25 to 40 cm. Once found throughout the island, its population has drastically declined due to illegal digging, and now it is extremely rare except for the protected area "Rebun Atsumorisou Group Habitat" in the Kita-teppu District. It blooms with pale cream-colored flowers from May to June. The labellum is large and pouch-shaped, 35 to 50 mm long, and the lateral petals are broadly ovate with short, pointed tips. It is an insect-pollinated flower, and its pollen is carried only by a bee called the Nise-haiiro-maruhanabachi (Bombus pseudobaicalensis). It is classified as Endangered (EN) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
