アメリカの南東部からバハマ諸島が原産です。低地の林や海岸林、湿地などに生え、高さは２０メートル以下になります。枝は斜上し、密な葉で被われます。葉は芳香があり革質、狭い卵形です。５月から６月ごろ、葉腋から出た小さな円錐花序に、淡い黄色の花を咲かせます。葉はスープや肉の風味づけに使用できます。果実は小さな青色または黒色の核果です。材は、高級家具や木材にも使用されています。

クスノキ科アボカド属の常緑高木で、学名は Persea borbonia (syn. Tamala borbonia)。英名は Red bay tree、Sweet bay。

The red bay tree (Persea borbonia) belongs to Lauraceae (the Laurel family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the southeastern United States and the Bahamas. This tree grows in low woods, coastal forests and bogs, and up to a height of 20 m. The branches are ascending and covered with dense leaves. The leaves are aromatic, leathery and narrowly ovate. The pale-yellow flowers bloom in small panicles from leaf axils in May and June. They can be used to flavor soups and meats. The fruit is a small, blue or black drupe. The wood is used for fine cabinetwork and also for lumber.
