ニューカレドニアやソロモン諸島をはじめとする太平洋諸島に分布しています。現在では広く熱帯の各地で植栽あるいは帰化しています。高さは２〜４メートルくらいになり、鮮やかな赤色の苞（Jungle King）が特徴です。苞がピンク（Jungle Queen）のものもあります。苞の中に、白色の小さな花が咲きます。

ショウガ科ハナミョウガ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Alpinia purpurata。英名は Red ginger。

The red ginger (Alpinia purpurata) belongs to Zingerberaceae (the Ginger family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed in the Pacific Islands, including New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands. Today, it is widely planted or naturalized in various parts of the tropics. It is about 2-4 m high and features bright red bracts (Jungle King). Some have pink bracts (Jungle Queen). Small white flowers bloom in the bracts.
