「たまねぎ（玉葱）」の一品種群です。外皮や内部の表皮が紅紫色をしています。ふつうの「たまねぎ」よりも甘みがあり、また辛みや刺激臭も少ないのでサラダや酢の物、和え物などに用いられます。赤い色はアントシアニンで、酸味を加えると色がさえます。代表的な品種には「湘南レッド」や「アーリーレッド」があります。
写真中２の品種は、「アーリーレッド鈴平」、下は「レッドグラマー」。

The red onion (Allium cepa) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is a group of varieties of "onions". The outer skin and inner epidermis are magenta. It is sweeter than ordinary "onions" and has less spiciness and pungent odor, so it is used for salads, vinegared dishes, and seasonings. The red color is anthocyanin, which can be enhanced by adding acidity. Typical varieties include "Shonan Red" and "Early Red". The 2nd variety in the photo are "Early Red Suzuhira" and the one below is "Red Glamor".
